CENTRAL PARK — As temperatures drop, droves of dogs dressed in their winter best are heating up the streets and parks with fashions that keep them stylish as well as toasty.

These chic canines are clothed in cashmere sweaters, bomber jackets, wool scarves, trench coats and stylish hats to brave the cold in style.

Owners often keep color, fabric and fit in mind when buying clothes for their dogs.

"Red works with her overall tone," said floral designer Amy Febinger about her pit bull mix, Millie. "I think about that — like she would not look good in pink."

Another dog owner, event planner Susan Holland, said she gives the same care to choosing what her dog wears as she does to her own clothing.

"I picked my dog's sweater in the same way that I pick my own clothing — for tailored elegance, beautifully-made, always handmade and good quality wool," she said.

Many said their oddly-shaped dogs, like the long-torsoed Dachshund, are often hard to shop for because dog clothes don't fit properly — so they hand make their own dog duds.

Store-bought dog clothing is not always cheap. While a "faux leather jacket" at Petco might cost $13.99, higher-end wear, like the Burberry trenchcoat for dogs, sell for upward of $150.

Some dog owners are opting to buy local brands like Brooklyn-based Monkie and Co. and the increasingly popular Bill Wolf brand.

Dog walker Jaison O'Neill, who often sees fashion-forward dogs, thinks ultimately that what a dog wears is an extension of the owner's tastes.

“If you walk around and see what the owners are wearing, usually the dog is wearing something similar," he said.
