GREENPOINT — A young woman died in what police believe was a freak accident when she plummeted from the ladder of her loft bed and struck her head.

Tansy Stowell, 28, who is from England, and her boyfriend, returned to their Driggs Avenue apartment at 4:30 a.m. after a night out and both passed out in their six-foot-tall loft bed, he later told investigators.

When Stowell's boyfriend awoke at 8:20 a.m., he found her slumped on the ground, bleeding from a wound from her head, police said.

He called 911 and emergency workers took Stowell to Woodhull Hospital where she couldn't be saved. She was declared dead at 9:15 a.m., according to the police report.

Their roommate later told investigators he'd opened the apartment door for Stowell and her boyfriend when they got home at 4:30 a.m. and then at some point in the middle of the night heard a "thump," but didn't get up to investigate.

Investigators believe that Stowell bumped her head on a hook that was on the ceiling as she climbed down the loft bed ladder, lost her balance and tumbled to the ground, according to the police report.

The hook was found torn from the ceiling near Stowell's body on the ground.

Homicide detectives interviewed Stowell's boyfriend at the hospital, who told them that they had been drinking and took drugs at a bar the night before, though he's not being considered as a suspect, according to the police report.

The medical examiners office will determine Stowell's official cause of death and the investigation is still ongoing, police said.
